The News of the World has published its last edition after 168 years. Its front page declares: “Thank you & goodbye. ” In a full-page editorial the paper offers an apology. “Quite simply, we lost our way. ” it says.
Mr Mu rdoch said on Saturday it had been “a collective decision” to close the paper, which he admitted had “let down its readers”. And he told the Reuters news agency News International’s chief executive and former editor, Rebekah Brooks, has his “total” su pport.
It marks the end of a newspaper where the journalists would get the stories at any cost, writes Dan Arnold, an investigative reporter at the paper from 1994 to 199 6.
It may not be the end of the world, but it is the end of the News of the World. Rupert Murdoch’s media company News Corp. took the dramatic step yesterday to end the News of the World. That’s the scandal-tarred(陷入窃听丑闻的) British tabloid.
