He added that it was unclear what the church's 67 employees would be doing in the future. French President Emmanuel Macron said Tuesday that he wanted the church rebuilt in five years.

A large campaign to raise money is already underway to rebuild the church. Up to Wednesday, donations came to $1 billion.
