IttookPughabout19minutestocompletetheone-kilometerswiminAntarcticawherethewateraveragedabout1.6degreesCelsius(摄氏度).Hesaysthathisbodycanonlytolerateabout20minutesinthefreezingwatersbeforeitstartsshuttingdown.Asheswims,hisbodytemperaturesteadilydrops,whichinturncauseshismuscle(肌肉)controltodrop,slowinghimdown.Whenheisdonewithhisswim,hissupportteamrusheshimtoahotshowerandittakesalmostanhourforhisbodytemperaturetoreturntonormal.
DoctorsandPughcautionthatonemustreceivemonthsoftrainingtoswiminsuchcoldwaters.Evenexpertswimmerswhoareunusedtofreezingwatercandrownwithinminutesbecauseofthephysicalshockexperiencedbythebody.Pughsayshetrainedforsixmonthsbeforethisswim.
ThisisnotthefirsttimethatLewishasswumindangerousconditions.In2007,heswamonekilometerintheNorthPoletodrawattentiontothemeltingArcticiceduetoclimatechange.In2015,heswamintheBayofWhalesinAntarcticasRossSeaaspartofhissuccessfulcampaigntohelpsetupamarinereservethere.
