资源简介

A

In midMarchhe was a warning tale for medical workers: an unnamed doctor in his 40s with a case of COVID19 so bad that he was near death.

Almost a month later45yearold emergency physician Ryan Padgett is back in his home in Seattlerebuilding his strength and being surprised at how quickly the new virus laid him low.

Padgett works at EvergreenHealththe hospital in suburban Seattle that saw the country's first known COVID19 deaths at the end of Februaryprimarily patients from the Life Care Nursing Home.At firsthe says he just had a headache and some muscle soreness (肌肉酸痛)but within just a few days his health took a sharp downturnhe could hardly breathe.

It took the urging (催促) of his wifetobeConnie Kinsleyto get him back to hospital. He didn't want toshe says.“Doctors are the worst patientshe argued.

Within hours of getting to EvergreenHealththey were putting him on a ventilator (呼吸机)“I have no personal memorybut evidently I told Kinsley where some important documents werejust in casehe says. And the next memory I had was about 16 days laterwaking up at Swedish Medical Centre.

While he was unconscioushe'd been transferred to a different hospitalSwedish Medical Centre near downtown Seattlebecause it's one of only two hospitals in the state with an extreme form of life support called ECMO.

Padgett is impressed by how quickly people's understanding of COVID19 has changedjust during the weeks he was on a ventilator. Not only has people's understanding of the illness changedbut the world has also changedhe says.

He also found out his wedding had been put off.Howeverhe and his wifetobe don't seem too concerned about it.When you survive something like I survivedyou'll realize that's all window dressing. It doesn't matterPadgett says.
