Holly Venning, a 14yearold student at Kirkby Stephen Grammar School, was invited to the EMI Hammersmith Road Studios in London, where Elton John recorded Candle in the Wind, to perform her song, Leavin, in the hope of becoming a star. Holly and her classmate Amanda Tinkler, aged 12, both saw the competition advertised in Sugar, a famous magazine. Dave Booker, the grammar school's music teacher, believed they had an advantage over many others in singing. Then with the help of Dave Booker, they wrote their own songs.
Over recent months, Kirkby Stephen Grammar School had collected more vouchers (票券) than any school in the county from a store, which bought some really exciting equipment for the music department. With this, students have been able to produce extremely high quality tapes. Moreover, Mr Booker has expertise in operating this type of equipment. He has high hopes of Holly being successful in the competition because of the quality of her song and the recording equipment used.
As well as handing in the songs, the girls had to send photographs of themselves and write in 50 words about why they wanted to win. Holly went to London with her mother, Carol Venning, and her two sisters. Holly was the next to the last to perform, but she said, “I wasn't nervous at all. It was a huge studio with a lot of people watching and listening.” The recording session was followed by a photographic one. Mrs Venning said proudly, “It was a wonderful experience and Holly took everything in her stride.” Holly now is keeping her fingers crossed. She has to wait two weeks to hear if she will be offered a recording contract.
