Martin Luther King, Jr.was a great man who worked for racial equality (种族平等) and civil rights (民权) in the United States of America.He was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia.Martin had a brother and a sister.Both his father and grandfather were ministers (牧师).His mother was a school teacher.She taught him how to read before he went to school.
Young Martin was a good student in school.He enjoyed reading books, singing, riding a bicycle, and playing football and baseball.Martin went to Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia when he was only 15 years old.
Martin had experiences of racism (种族歧视) early in his life.He decided to do something to make the world better.After finishing college, Dr.King became a minister and moved to Alabama.During the 1950's, Dr.King did a lot for civil rights and racial equality.He fought for African­Americans (非洲裔美国黑人).He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
Dr.King was killed on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee.To remember him as an important leader, we celebrate Martin Luther King Day each year on the third Monday in January.And August 28, the day of Dr.King's speech I Have a Dream, is called “Dream Day”
