AccordingtoMrRios,whorunssecuritycompanyWhiteScope,thereare50,000buildingscurrentlyconnectedtotheInternet,includingresearchinstitutes,churchesandhospitals,and2,000ofthoseareonlinewithnopasswordprotection.MartynThomas,aprofessorofITatGreshamCollegeintheUK,says,“Itisbeyonddoubtthatattemptstoattackbuildingmanagementsystemsarehappeningallthetime.”
Makingabuildingsmartgenerallymeansconnectingthesystemsthatcontrolheating,lightingandsecuritytotheInternetandthewidercorporatenetwork.Thereisastrongreasonfordoingthis,saidAndrewKelly,principalsecurityconsultantatdefencecompanyQinetiQ.
